site-specific exhibition 2017 | Dom na Kinoto (Cinema House) Sofia
“Cinema house, more than a cinema” serves as the slogan for the exhibition 4:3, which reflects the significance of the venue—a cinema that historically functioned as the headquarters for the free speech and democracy club and a safe place for students and creatives persecuted by the socialist authorities’ police force.
In this context, the exhibition seeks to create a symbiosis between art and cinema, intertwining the house's rich history with its contemporary activities. By doing so, it aims to push the boundaries of arts and culture, fostering a dialogue that connects the past with the present.
„Cinema House is located in Sofia City Center and is one of the oldest and last few standing art-house movie theaters in the Bulgarian capital, a recognised member of the Europa Cinemas network. Dom na kinoto is one of the few that has survived the economically turbulent 1990s without permanently shutting its doors. Recognising the fact that Cinema House had been once positioned at the heart of historical and cultural events – e.g. in 1989-1990 it served as the headquarters of the free speech and democracy club, as well as “safe-house” for students/ creatives persecuted by the socialist authorities’ police force – we would like to once again bring Cinema House to the forefront of Sofia’s cultural and social life. We have de- fined a new slogan, “Cinema House, more than a cinema” and, as of October 2015, have been developing a rebranding strategy – aimed not only at new audience attraction, but also audience retention."
